Studying in a Problem-based learning curriculum, however, requires special learning and specific skills that you might not have used before. Afterwards all Stenden schools implemented the PBL concept as well. In 1992, the Faculty of Economics and Management with schools for Hotel, Retail and Leisure Management, introduced an integrated service-based and problem-based curriculum. Throughout the years, Maastricht has developed an adapted PBL- model, introducing the seven-step method for learning from problems, and thoroughly researched the different aspects of PBL.Īt the start of the former HMSL in 1987 (nowadays IHM) PBL was applied at Stenden for the first time. It was first introduced to the Netherlands at the start of the Medical school of Maastricht University. Since its introduction, many universities all over the world have introduced Problem-based learning. Secondly, the abundance of information and knowledge, the rapid technological development as well as changing needs in the medical profession have demanded a new approach to effectively prepare students for their future profession. First, medical students in the clinical phase had difficulty to apply their pre-clinical knowledge to practice situations. The reasons for introducing PBL were twofold. Originally Problem-based learning has been designed for and introduced to the pre-clinical phase of the medical curriculum at McMaster University Canada (Barrows & Tamblyn, 1980). Problem-based learning is based on social constructivist principles about learning and knowledge stating that acquiring knowledge is not exclusively the consequence of direct transfer of knowledge by a teacher, but rather the result of student’s personal involvement in the learning through self-directed learning and interaction with peers.

It will enhance understanding and retention of knowledge in the long run and professional skills development. Real-life problems from the future work field are starting point for learning as well as student’s prior knowledge and experiences. Problem-based learning or PBL is a student-centred educational approach, in which students are responsibility for own learning and knowledge development because PBL focuses on independently learning for life and career.
